Double Chin and Neck: Causes and Treatments
In a profile photo, you notice some volume under your chin. Or the skin of your neck seems less firm to you. You are looking into how to get rid of a double chin, but these two observations do not necessarily call for the same treatment. Fat, sagging skin and muscle bands can occur together. The purpose of the assessment is to understand what contributes to this appearance in your case before discussing the possible changes.

At a glance
Five things to know before deciding- What forms a double chin: fat under the chin, sagging skin or muscle bands in the neck can occur together. Appearance alone is not enough to choose a treatment.
- What CARE MD offers: focused ultrasound, with firming as the goal and after an assessment. Firming the skin and reducing fat are two different goals.
- Other approaches: liposuction, neck lifts, fat-reducing injections and cold-based treatments are options for comparison, not treatments CARE MD offers here.
- Result and duration: they vary from person to person; no result is guaranteed.
- Before any treatment: a medical assessment, which can lead to a decision not to proceed. Swelling at the front of the neck must first be examined by a doctor.
Skin, neck bands and jawline: understanding the different approaches

Nefertiti Lift
An injection that relaxes the platysma, the thin muscle that forms the vertical neck bands. It is not surgery.

Masseter and jaw contour
The muscle that closes your jaw when you chew; if it gains volume, it can widen the lower face and make it look square. During the assessment, the doctor distinguishes between muscle and bone and assesses how fat and skin contribute to your concern.

Focused ultrasound (HIFU)
Sound waves concentrated beneath the skin, which heat it and can prompt it to produce collagen. It is not a laser.

Jawline Contouring
Filler adds volume, a masseter injection relaxes a muscle and microfocused ultrasound targets mildly to moderately sagging skin. Some biostimulators support collagen production; their effect depends on the material.

What Causes a Double Chin? Fat, Sagging Skin, Muscle or Jaw
The term "double chin" describes what you see between the chin and the neck, not a specific tissue. A fat deposit under the chin, sagging skin and muscle bands in the neck are different things. Heredity and aging can also influence the contours of the face and neck, without explaining your situation on their own.

If bands appear on your neck, ask the doctor what forms them and whether a treatment targeting the muscle, such as the Nefertiti lift, can be discussed. That is not the same question as one about a pocket of fat. You may also have heard of the platysma or the masseter: ask which one is involved in what you notice, rather than choosing an injection based on the name of a muscle.
If your jawline is what mainly bothers you, tell the doctor whether you want to change its outline or reduce the volume under your chin. During the examination, you can discuss how the shape of your chin and jaw relates to what you want to change. The choice depends on what contributes to this appearance in your case, not on the term "double chin" alone.
Double Chin Treatments by Cause
To firm the skin under the chin, CARE MD offers focused ultrasound, after an assessment. This goal is not the same as reducing fat. Before choosing, ask which device will be used, what it targets in your case and what it will leave unchanged.
Microfocused ultrasound with visualization produces heat beneath the skin and can stimulate the renewal of collagen, the protein that gives skin its firmness. It can improve sagging in the lower face and neck. Other ultrasound technologies target fat cells: the word "ultrasound" is therefore not enough to tell what a device does. The doctor must explain the effects and limitations of the device used at CARE MD, particularly if your concern is fat, neck bands or the shape of your jaw.
Liposuction removes localized fat deposits, including under the chin. Skin that has lost its elasticity does not necessarily tighten well once the fat has been removed. The risks of this operation include infection, changes in sensation and irregular or asymmetrical contours.
A neck lift is another operation: it can address sagging skin, fat deposits and muscle bands. Its risks include infection, changes in sensation and unfavourable scarring. Nerve injury that can weaken the lower lip is also possible, but rare.
An injection designed to reduce fat under the chin and a cold-based treatment are yet other approaches. The injection can cause pain, swelling, numbness, bruising, redness and hardness at the injection site. With fat freezing, fatty tissue can sometimes increase rather than decrease. These examples are not a complete list of risks.
CARE MD does not offer these fat reduction options or surgery here. If you are instead considering cosmetic injections, ask what their goal is: targeting a muscle, adding volume and reducing fat are different goals. The doctor can discuss the approach appropriate for your concern, including not having a procedure.

Ask whether your concern involves a muscle rather than fat or skin.
To reduce a double chin, the first step is to understand what forms it. If you want it to disappear, tell the doctor: you can compare this expectation with the possible changes and the limitations of the treatment.
What to Expect: Sessions, Duration, Risks and Cost
Before starting, ask about the number of sessions, how far apart they are, what you will feel during the treatment and what to expect afterwards. The schedule depends on the treatment and your situation; someone else's schedule does not predict yours. Also ask how the result will be assessed and what follow-up will be needed.
For ultrasound, do not stop at asking whether the session is uncomfortable. Ask about the risks and contraindications specific to the device used, the signs that should prompt you to call back and what to do if a reaction occurs. You must be given this information before you decide; the risks of operations, injections or cold-based treatment do not describe the risks of this device.
- Sessions
-
Ask about their number and frequency for the recommended treatment.
- Duration of the effect
-
It varies from person to person.
- Maintenance
-
Ask in what situations another treatment could be considered.
- Cost
-
It is discussed during a consultation, once the treatment being considered has been determined.
- Guarantee
-
Neither the result nor how long it lasts is guaranteed.
When to See a Doctor: Thyroid and Neck Swelling
Do not assume right away that swelling at the front of the neck is a double chin: have it examined by a doctor. The thyroid can enlarge and form a goitre, a swelling that is usually painless. Appearance alone is not enough to find its cause. Also mention any change in your voice or trouble swallowing before seeking cosmetic treatment.
Seek care right away
If you have difficulty breathing or wheezing, seek medical help immediately, without waiting for a cosmetic consultation.
At Home: Exercises, Massage and Devices
When faced with promises about exercises, massage or home devices, be clear about what you want to change. Working a muscle, changing the appearance of the skin and reducing fat under the chin are three different goals. A promise of muscle strengthening does not tell you whether the volume will decrease. For massage as well, ask what change is expected and how it can be checked, rather than relying on a promise of targeted fat removal.
The safety and effectiveness of fat-freezing devices sold for home use have not been established. The risks of fat freezing include fatty tissue in the treated area growing instead of shrinking. This risk applies to cold-based treatment, not to a simple massage or to ultrasound.
Why an Assessment Comes Before Treatment
Start with what bothers you: the volume under your chin, the skin of your neck, the bands or your jawline. Prepare your questions about what the treatment can change and what it will leave as it is. To get to know the CARE MD team, you can learn more about our professionals; ask who will do your assessment and who will perform the treatment being considered.
Mention your medical conditions, medications and current treatments. Before an injectable procedure, it is essential to tell the doctor about them. Also ask whether an in-person examination is needed and what can be discussed during a first virtual conversation. You can go over the possible benefits, risks and follow-up before deciding, and discuss the possibility of not having a procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get rid of a double chin?
It depends on what forms it: fat under the chin, sagging skin and muscle bands can occur together. CARE MD offers focused ultrasound with firming as the goal, after an assessment. This goal does not mean that fat will be reduced. Nor does a promise of strengthening through exercise tell you whether the volume will decrease. Start by identifying what bothers you, then discuss the possible changes and the limitations of the treatment with the doctor.

Do you need surgery to remove a double chin?
Not necessarily: it depends on what contributes to this appearance in your case. Liposuction removes fat, but skin with little elasticity does not necessarily tighten well afterwards. A neck lift can address the skin, fat deposits and muscle bands. The risks of liposuction include infection, changes in sensation and irregular contours; a neck lift also carries a risk of unfavourable scarring and, rarely, nerve injury that can weaken the lower lip. CARE MD does not offer these operations; it highlights ultrasound with firming as the goal, after an assessment. If you are thinking about having your double chin removed, first discuss what you want to change and what each approach can actually aim for.

Double chin in men: what can be done?
Describe what bothers you: the volume under the chin, the skin of the neck or the bands that appear on it. Being a man is not, on its own, enough to choose a treatment. Ask the doctor to check what contributes to this appearance in your case, then discuss the options, risks and limitations. A woman who wants to reduce her double chin should also have her own situation clarified, rather than adopting someone else's treatment.

How much does double chin treatment cost?
The cost is discussed during a consultation, once the treatment being considered has been determined. Ask what the amount includes, particularly the recommended sessions and follow-up. You can send your question to the CARE MD team using the form before deciding.
What can focused ultrasound do under the chin?
CARE MD offers it with firming as the goal, after an assessment. Microfocused ultrasound with visualization can produce heat beneath the skin, stimulate collagen renewal and improve sagging in the lower face and neck. This does not automatically describe every ultrasound device: some target fat cells. Ask the doctor to explain how the device to be used at CARE MD works. The doctor must also tell you about the possible changes and risks before you begin. The result and how long it lasts vary from person to person and are not guaranteed.

Is swelling at the front of the neck a double chin?
Not necessarily. Swelling at the front of the neck can come from the thyroid, for example a goitre, and must be examined by a doctor before any cosmetic treatment. Mention any change in your voice or trouble swallowing. If you have difficulty breathing or wheezing, seek medical help immediately.

Double Chin and Neck: What Treatments Do Not Guarantee and What Calls for Caution
The appearance of your neck is not enough to choose a treatment. This information does not replace a medical examination or an explanation of the risks of the recommended treatment.
Limitations and precautions
Swelling at the front of the neck needs to be examined by a doctor before any cosmetic treatment.
Mention any change in your voice or trouble swallowing.
Difficulty breathing or wheezing requires immediate medical help.
Tell the doctor about all your medical conditions and current treatments before an injectable procedure.
Neither skin firming nor how long it lasts is guaranteed.
A firming goal does not mean that fat will be reduced or that neck bands or the shape of the jaw will be corrected. Ask about the limitations of the device used at CARE MD.
The risks of liposuction include infection, changes in sensation and irregular contours. The risks of a neck lift include infection, changes in sensation, unfavourable scarring and, rarely, nerve injury that can weaken the lower lip. CARE MD does not offer these operations.
These examples do not replace information on the risks and contraindications specific to the treatment being considered, particularly ultrasound.
